For the renovation of the four-star Van der Valk Theatrehotel De Oranjerie and its accompanying Cerise Grand Café, QMVH Architectuur looked to retain its original character while creating a new connection into an addition – a former telephone exchange building that was recently acquired by client Luiten van der Valk Beheer.
Completing a sophisticated palette and introducing acoustic comfort as part of the hotel renovation, a variety of Rockfon acoustic ceiling solutions were installed throughout, including multiple suspended black ceilings.
Expanding the Van der Valk Theatrehotel De Oranjerie
The hotel addition is the latest development in the project that encompasses a theatre as its primary attraction – the city's very first theatre that was built in the 70s. The hotel had initially emerged to provide additional facilities but was now due for renovation and expansion. "We have already completed several projects with Luiten van der Valk Beheer. In 2016, we were approached to design the adjacent restaurant and kitchen in addition to the theatre hall", explains QMVH project leader Sjoerd Karis.
To connect the newly acquired addition to the primary hotel building, QMVH Architectuur created a transparent connecting corridor, allowing guests to comfortably access facilities such as the wellness centre, swimming pool, fitness room, restaurant, and breakfast room located in the existing hotel.
Inside the renovated hotel, black-and-white marble flooring, golden chandeliers, and a seven-metre-high greenery develop a sense of grandeur across the ground floor and the Cerise Grand Café. In other areas, cream-white elements complete the refined palette.
Renovating the Hotel with Acoustic Comfort
Acoustic comfort is paramount to the indoor environmental quality of hotels, especially in areas that witness high foot traffic during peak hours at certain moments of the day or throughout the week – such as the reception area during group check-ins or the dining spaces during breakfast.
QMVH Architectuur specified acoustic ceiling solutions throughout the Van der Valk Theatrehotel De Oranjerie, including Rockfon Color-all colourful ceiling tiles, the monolithic solution Rockfon Mono Acoustic, and the high-hygiene ceiling tiles Rockfon CleanSpace Pro.
"In the foyer, we installed the seamless and sleek Rockfon Mono Acoustic ceiling in the Charcoal colour", says René Houtvast, operations manager at Plabos Afbouwsystemen, who installed the solutions. The scope of the work included the ceiling areas across the transparent connecting corridor that knits the two structures.
In the Cerise Grand Café on the mezzanine floor, a skylight was closed, plaster frames were installed, and ceiling tiles were placed where the steel previously ran. The shades of the ceiling tiles colour-matches the new false walls.
In the breakfast servery, cream, white, and gold tones predominate against marble flooring. Rockfon Color-all tiles in the Hemp colour complete the design scheme with soft grey ceiling design and help mitigate excess reverberation caused by the various hard surfaces in the space. Behind, in the kitchen, Rockfon CleanSpace Pro were installed – cleanable ceiling tiles particularly suitable for industrial and commercial spaces that have strict hygiene requirements.
