The Sustainability of Stone Wool | Rockfon

Build on a rock-solid foundation.

Stone wool delivers exceptional all-round performance with multiple sustainability advantages.

The bedrock of our noise-absorbing solutions is volcanic stone, an abundant material that the Earth continuously replenishes. The stone wool we create from it is durable, fully recyclable, and supports a closed-loop circular economy.

How it's made

Stone as foundation

The earliest documented origins of stone wool date back to Hawaii in the early nineteenth century when scientists noted that erupting lava could form fine, hair-like fibres - a phenomenon later called "Pele's Hair" in honour of the volcano goddess.

Abundance

Endlessly replenished by volcanic activity and the movement of tectonic plates, the stone used to make stone wool is an abundant material, meaning we do not deplete scarce resources to produce our acoustic solutions.

Recyclability

Because it is infinitely recyclable without loss in performance, stone wool is an optimal choice in supporting a more circular economy.

Through our Rockcycle program, used stone wool and offcuts can be sent to our facilities for closed-loop recycling.

Durability

Stone wool has been shown to retain its performance for at least 65 years, reducing the need for replacement, using fewer resources, generating less waste, and spreading the environmental impact of manufacturing over a longer period of time.

Decarbonisation

Using proven technology that is available today, we are transitioning our stone wool production facilities to lower-emissions technology such as electric melters, reducing the embodied carbon of the stone wool by up to 80 percent.

The pathway to a low-carbon future for acoustic solutions is clear.

Performance

The search for sustainable materials often involves compromising on key performance criteria. Not with stone wool.

Stone wool is a natural sound absorber, inherently non-combustible, highly durable, and hydrophobic. Even when endlessly recycled, stone wool retains these properties in full.

Stone wool in numbers

38 000

Each year, the Earth produces 38 000 times more volcanic stone than is used by the entire ROCKWOOL Group.

1000°C

Stone wool has a melting point above 1000°C, helping to limit damage and support safety in the event of a fire.

65 years

Tests conducted at Copenhagen Airport showed that stone wool insulation retained its performance properties after 65 years.
