Using WELL as a tool for success
Hear Jess Cooper, Chief Product Officer at the International WELL Building Institute, share key insights on certification.
What is WELL?
The WELL Building Standard™, managed by the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), was launched in the USA in 2014. It is a vehicle for buildings and organizations to deliver more thoughtful and intentional spaces that enhance human health and well-being.
Originally focusing on office buildings, WELL has since expanded to cover many types of spaces where people live, learn, heal, and play.
What does it mean if a building is WELL certified?
WELL-certified buildings support occupants’ physical and mental health across 10 core concepts: air, water, thermal comfort, light, movement, nourishment, sound, mind, community and materials.
Research shows that buildings developed in line with these principles deliver a clear return on investment. For instance, an MIT study found that WELL-certified buildings achieved 7.7 percent higher rents per square foot. WELL Certification is also linked to improvements of 10 median points in occupant-perceived productivity.
