What is an EPD & how do we use it?

An EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) is a technical document that looks at a product’s environmental impact throughout its life. The EPD is the result of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).

It is used for Building Rating Schemes like LEED®, BREEAM® and DGNB. You can also use it to assess the environmental performance of a product or even benchmark it against alternatives.

Our Rockfon EPD follows European and International Standards (EN 15804, ISO 14025 for EPD, ISO 14040 (part 1 & 2) and ISO 14044).

What is LCA?

The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) quantifies the environmental impacts, resource and energy used in the life cycle of a product, everything from the extraction of raw materials to its end of life.

The LCA is the approach that you need to follow in order to calculate the contribution of the products in terms of waste, energy and environmental impacts during its whole life cycle. These results are documented in the EPD.

What information can I find in the EPD?

In the EPD you can find information about the assessment, the products included in the declaration and most importantly the impacts that the product has in the environment. These are split into three groups:

Impact Indicators

These are the quantified impacts of the product to various environmental categories, for example the impact of the product to climate change (GWP), or the impact of the product to the depletion of resources (ADPe) or the impact of the product to the creation of the Ozone Hole (ODP).

Resource Indicators

These indicators are related to the primary energy consumed in the different parts of the product’s lifecycle and the split between renewable and non-renewable sources. In this category indicators that show the consumption of water and the use of secondary materials, are included.

Output & Waste Flows

This category documents the materials for recycling and exported energy, i.e. electrical and thermal energy generated and supplied to the net grid are also taken into account. The hazardous and non-hazardous waste amounts are also declared here.

1: Product Selection

Let’s take the example of Rockfon Blanka A edge. In order to calculate its environmental impacts we first find the scaling factor of the product in the table on page 3 of our EPD.

2: Scaling formula

In order to calculate the environmental performance of the specific product, we need to multiply the values from the results tables in the end of the EPD, with the scaling factor of the tile.In the result we need to add the impact of the front of the tile or facing, found in the Annex. Does this sound complicated? Maybe the formula below can help!

For our example, in order to calculate the Global Warming Potential, or GWP, of the tile for A1-A3 I used the following information:
1,32 x 1,2 + 0,85 = 2,43 kg CO2 eq.

3: Other Impacts

And if you would like to calculate other impacts of the tile you simply follow the same process described above for the other categories.

Consider a product's entire life cycle, taking into consideration its impacts across all the life cycle stages and its expected lifetime.

Sustainability is not only about the carbon footprint. Consider all the indicators in the EPD and also others that are not found there, like recyclability and recycled content to assess the sustainability of the product.

Benefits in the building

It is not uncommon for a building material to have multiple product benefits, which can lower the overall footprint of a building (e.g. product with additional or improved functionalities in the building can lower the building’s related impacts). It is important to take those into account before making the final assessment.
