The newly-installed Rockfon Color-all ceiling tiles introduce Class A sound absorption to the space for maximised noise control.

Recycling and acoustics in VW’s City Studio

When launching a space that introduces the future of mobility, design choices play a central role. For Volkswagen's new City Studio in the heart of Copenhagen, the goal was clear – design a sophisticated, sustainable space that enhances the experience of their all-electric range. From the start, acoustics were at the forefront of the vision.

Volkswagen's City Studio offers a compelling example of how to align a space with environmental goals. Rockfon Color-all acoustic ceiling tiles were installed to create a premium, immersive environment while meeting strong sustainability objectives. The tiles are Cradle to Cradle Certified® Silver and are fully recyclable with high recycled content, expressing Volkswagen's commitment to a low-impact, future-facing design.

The refined automobile showroom setting, characterised by wood-clad walls and matte black ceilings, lets the cars take centre stage while creating a calm, pleasant acoustic experience. The tiles support speech clarity and reduce noise so that guests and employees can focus and connect. "Even if it's not directly related to our cars, we believe in contributing wherever we can", explains Martin Orthmann, Marketing Manager at Volkswagen Denmark.

The transformation did not just look ahead – it looked at what was already in place. The ceiling tiles were installed into grids that were already in place and the tiles removed were sent through the recycling scheme Rockcycle. The recycling of the ceiling tiles is part of Volkswagen's broader ambition to reduce waste at every step."

"To help sustainability on its way into our showroom, we chose to make us of Rockfon’s recycling scheme so that the 'old' ceilings can be given new life somewhere else. This is an important key stone for Volkswagen to contribute with what we can now, big and small, even if it’s not just about cars”, adds Martin Orthmann.

Recycling and timing aligned with design schedule

The design of the showroom was completed in partnership with Multiwork, with Rockfon offering customer tile sizes, just-in-time delivery, and close design support to meet the project timeline. "Rockfon was the right partner. Their team provided great input, from recommending the recycling scheme to tailoring deliveries so we could stay on schedule", said Project Manager Niels Fæster.
