Starting point for sports activities: the Winterberg Citizen's Train Station
In Winterberg, Sauerland, Germany, an attractive, newly built railway station has been welcoming its guests and locals since 2018. It doesn't matter whether you want to do sports yourself or are "only" a visitor to winter sports events. The shape of the building is shaped like a ski jump and blends in with the overall picture of the region.
The visitor is also positively surprised inside the building. The entrance and waiting area conveys openness and charm with its room height. The Citizen's Railway Station is a modern multi-purpose station. The building incorporates the station itself, the local adult education centre and a municipal citizens' office.
Various optical and acoustic requirements led to Rockfon
Large rooms with ceiling-high glass facades and other sound-reflecting materials such as metal and marble are a visual highlight, but often lead to acoustic challenges. This makes sense to anyone who becomes aware of the reverberation of churches. With larger crowds of people, the noise level quickly becomes unpleasantly high, normal conversations are hardly possible and the stay becomes generally exhausting. But in a multifunctional station, many people and waiting times are unavoidable.
Additional rooms directly adjacent to the station lobby made it difficult for the architect to find the best possible acoustic solution. The smaller rooms of the municipal citizens' office and a larger room for adult education also required full attention during planning and implementation.
Subtle design combined with good acoustics
Modern appearance, pleasant acoustics and user-friendliness were required for the Citizen's Station. Architect Helga Köster-Saure opted for a suspended ceiling and in all rooms for the coloured Rockfon Color-all® in the discreet grey tone "Concrete".
The ceiling system was also provided by Rockfon. In order to retain the modern and discreet ceiling character, the architect also chose the colour "Concrete" for the visible runners in the station area - colour-coordinated. In the room of the adult education centre, the decision was made for an almost jointless appearance. As a room open to the public, this combination also fulfilled all the statutory noise and fire protection requirements.
Award-winning
The Citizen's Railway Station not only convinced the client, the planner and the users. Its architecture, acoustics and function also convinced the "Allianz pro Schiene e.V." (Pro-Rail Alliance), which annually selects the station of the year. And Rockfon contributed to the fact that the "Bürgerbahnhof Winterberg" won this award in 2018.
