Transforming a metro hub with art and acoustics

In Stockholm’s Station City, more than 125 000 people pass through the metro mezzanine each day. When it underwent major refurbishment, the goal was to enhance the commuter experience by integrating art, acoustics and architecture. Designed by Ahlqvist & Almqvist architects and featuring an expressive ceiling installation by artist Karin Lindh, the space now offers visual impact and acoustic calm – realised with the flexible and seamless Rockfon Mono Acoustic system.

Designing a calmer journey below ground

Opened in 2017 as part of Stockholm’s Citybanan rail extension, Station City sits at the heart of urban mobility. Located beneath the intersection of Vasagatan and Klarabergsgatan, it serves as a key commuter hub, connecting all metro lines and the central station. But this station is more than transit infrastructure – it is an integrated civic space, combining function, sustainability and public engagement above and below ground.

To enhance the underground experience, artist Karin Lindh was selected through a public competition to create a ceiling installation. Inspired by Stockholm’s tradition of metro art and Bernini’s sculptural mastery, she envisioned a rippling, fabric-like form across the 200-square-metre mezzanine ceiling. The challenge was to find a material that could deliver this precise, sculptural vision while meeting acoustic and technical demands.

Rockfon Mono Acoustic was chosen for its flexibility and performance. “The panels are flexible and can be bent, creating both sharp and soft bends”, said Thomas Svensen of TS Akustik. The seamless surface helps achieve the crisp daylight interplay Lindh intended, while its stone wool composition ensures high sound absorption. The result is a ceiling that quietly supports both calm and clarity in one of Stockholm’s busiest spaces.

A space that moves people – in every sense

Station City Stockholm illustrates what’s possible when architecture, infrastructure, and public art work in harmony. Through close collaboration and thoughtful material choice, a complex ceiling became both a visual centrepiece and an acoustic solution. Rockfon Mono Acoustic helped realise a vision that delivers clarity, calm, and comfort—supporting one of Sweden’s busiest transit environments with both elegance and performance.
