Balancing Raw Structure with Acoustic Comfort

Rockfon Eclipse rafts complement wood, concrete, and glass in an open-plan office design that transforms a warehouse into a calm, modern workspace.

Flexible acoustics in a converted warehouse office

Kimbrer Computer’s new 2500 square metre office in Aars was once an industrial warehouse. Designed by Bjørk & Maigård Arkitekter with Svend Poulsen A/S, the conversion focused on maintaining an open, raw aesthetic while improving acoustics. Rockfon Eclipse acoustic rafts were chosen for their ability to control reverberation and define functional zones – a solution that also allows for layout changes over time.

Acoustic zoning for a multifunctional workspace

The transformation of Kimbrer Computer’s headquarters involved converting a 2500 square metre warehouse in Aars into a modern office. Designed by Bjørk & Maigård Arkitekter and engineer Svend Poulsen A/S, the concept preserved the building’s raw structure while introducing visual clarity and acoustic comfort. The open layout includes glass partitions, a canteen, lounge, meeting rooms, and a central atrium.

Maintaining visible concrete and hard surfaces posed acoustic challenges. “The challenges are especially great when former industrial buildings have to be transformed into open office landscapes”. Studies show that office noise can reduce work ability by 10–15 percent, with error rates rising by up to 35 percent when performing complex tasks in noisy environments.

Rockfon Eclipse acoustic rafts were selected for their Class A performance and flexibility. Suspended from the ceiling, the white rafts absorb sound from both sides while leaving ducts, pipes and beams exposed. “Their white surfaces make them stand out razor sharp, and we have therefore also used them to mark zones with workplaces”, explained Maigård. The layout supports visual organisation without walls.

The Eclipse rafts were installed on a rail system that enables repositioning as needed. “It is a very flexible system”, said Rockfon consultant Jeppe Kjærgaard, “where the location of the rafts can be completely adapted to the need”. This made the system ideal for an open-plan office with future layout changes. The rafts can even be staggered in height to create additional visual texture.

The design concept focused on contrast and balance – raw concrete beams alongside ash wood elements, light next to dark, and acoustic function integrated with structure. A wooden floor axis runs through the centre of the space, guiding movement and defining bar, meeting and lounge zones. Wood panelling at floor and ceiling edges complements the white acoustic islands above.

“The whole thing is meant to form a kind of symphony”, said Maigård, “where all elements, from the acoustic rafts to the wood panels, contribute something unique to the look of the room and at the same time have a crucial function”. The result is an office space that supports both concentration and collaboration – without compromising the building’s original architectural identity.

Acoustics that support focus, layout and aesthetics

Kimbrer Computer’s new office demonstrates how Rockfon Eclipse can support flexible, acoustically controlled spaces in raw, open environments. The rafts help shape work zones, reduce noise and enhance comfort without concealing the industrial structure. The result is a workspace that balances clarity and openness with practical functionality — adaptable to future needs.
