Meeting Czech Reverberation Standards

Acoustic ceilings and wall panels support Czech standards across a renovated music-focused elementary school in Prague.

Time for renovation

Gen. František Fajtl Elementary School in Prague 9 has carried a long educational tradition since beginning its mission in 1931. The school focuses strongly on aesthetic education, particularly music and art, with teaching taking place across specialist classrooms that combine theory with practical learning. A school orchestra also forms part of the educational environment, alongside a nursery school, after-school club, and a broad range of extracurricular activities.

The elementary school is spread across two buildings in Prague 9 and includes classrooms, a dining hall, a gymnasium, and an open-air sports pitch. When the original building underwent renovation, acoustic quality and the modern appearance of the interiors became key priorities for both the client and architectural studio Křivka s.r.o. The project aimed to meet Czech legislative requirements for reverberation time within school premises.

White acoustic ceiling tiles were introduced throughout the school to reduce reverberation and support speech clarity across teaching spaces. The ceilings also contribute to brighter interiors, helping daylight move further into the rooms.

Noise control in the corridors

Across its varied environments, the renovation needed to respond to different acoustic conditions while also meeting Czech legislative requirements for reverberation time in educational spaces.

Rockfon Artic acoustic ceiling tiles were used within the corridors, bringing Class A sound absorption to the busy spaces. The lightweight 15mm-thick stone wool tiles also supported the practical demands of the refurbishment process through efficient handling and installation. Their ease of maintenance aligns with the operational needs of a public school used continuously throughout the academic year.

Bright and resistant classrooms

Rockfon Blanka acoustic ceiling tiles were specified for the classrooms. Their ultra-white, ultra-matte surface increases light reflectance and diffusion, helping create brighter interiors while reducing the visual heaviness often associated with suspended ceiling systems. The ceilings were further combined with the Rockfon Blanka Bas variant, appropriately reflecting sound to promote speech intelligibility.

The walls of the classrooms were also used to support sound absorption through Rockfon VertiQ wall panels. In active school environments, surfaces are exposed to repeated incidental impact over time. The woven surface of Rockfon VertiQ panels resists perforation and impact, supporting the long-term demands of busy educational interiors.

Following the installation of the four acoustic solutions, the school environment underwent acoustic measurement, with results meeting Czech acoustic standards for schools.
