It isn’t just the sound insulation capabilities of a product that affect the amount of noise being transferred from an adjacent room; the sound absorbing properties of the product will also have a positive influence. Something which is NOT reflected in the Dn,f,w values.

Sound Absorption and Sound Insulation

Acoustic well-being is determined primarily by sound absorption and sound insulation.
Ceilings with the same sound insulation (dB) value, but different sound absorption levels, will result in different sound pressure levels.

Low absorption ceiling

When the sound source room has a ceiling with low sound absorption, it results in high sound pressure and poor reverberation. Even if the ceiling provides a good sound insulation the sound being transmitted is higher than it would be with a ceiling with absorption.

Mid absorption ceiling

When a room has a ceiling with improved sound absorption, it results in lower sound pressure as part of the sound is absorbed. Combined with good sound insulation it will result in less noise being transmitted than in the previous case.

High absorption ceiling

A combination of both high sound absorption and high sound insulation results in a comfortable acoustic space with great acoustic privacy.
The high absorption results in low sound pressure in the source room, as much of noise is absorbed by the ceiling, which also results in less sound being transmitted to the adjoining room. When the receiving room also has a high absorbing ceiling, the sound pressure level will further decrease as the remaining sound entering the room is absorbed.
