Quick summary:

Explore interior spaces with floating raft ceilings created using acoustic tiles installed into a grid or panels that are simply suspended.

Unlike ceiling baffles that are installed vertically, floating raft ceilings are typically installed horizontally – often using metal wires fixed into an attachment hook or otherwise directly fixed to the soffit without any perimeter finishes. The installation accessories are concealed, giving the illusion that the ceiling is indeed floating.

Such raft ceilings are especially ideal in spaces where traditional suspended ceiling solutions cannot be installed. Besides that unique advantage, they also offer visual interest, acting as focal points on their own.

Below, explore floating raft ceilings in projects around the world achieved using Rockfon solutions, either with modular acoustic tiles installed into a suspended grid, or entirely grid-free using acoustic floating panels.

Walworth Academy

London, England

At Walworth Academy in London, a ceiling solution was required that combined cost efficiency with key design aesthetics to improve acoustics in both the dining hall and classrooms, while maintaining the school's contemporary image. The initial specification involved installing perforated plasterboard rafts; however, after close discussions with all parties involved, Rockfon Tropic ceiling tiles were placed into a series of floating raft grids.

Malmesbury, England

The Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology campus radiates around a two-storey "Roundhouse" where 220 Rockfon Eclipse panels are installed. "Each of the islands installed was bespoke. To resolve the issue, they installed 20 Rockfon Eclipse frameless floating ceiling panels with clean, minimalistic A edges to create raft ceilings.
