The adaptive reuse of a former tobacco factory
Converting an industrial heritage site in Strasbourg into a functional educational space without losing what makes it special.

From factory to faculty
The Manufacture des Tabacs in Strasbourg's Krutenau neighbourhood was built in 1849 for tobacco production. After a history of wartime damage and changes in ownership, production stopped in 2010 and the building was closed and designated as a protected heritage site.
In 2023, 11,000m² of the factory became part of the University of Strasbourg, the city's largest educational institution. Vurpas Architectes converted three lots into classrooms, lecture halls, laboratories, research offices and communal areas.
Converting an industrial building into a university comes with a clear problem: factories aren't built for learning.
Hard surfaces, exposed beams, and a heritage constraint
The factory is a large, open industrial space with hard floors, brick walls and original timber beams running across the ceilings. Every surface reflects sound. For classrooms and lecture halls where speech clarity and focus matter, that's a serious acoustic problem.
At the same time, as a protected heritage building, any modification had to be non-intrusive. The industrial character of the space, including the original beams, had to be preserved.
"The major challenge was to offer spaces adapted to each area while preserving the industrial interior design of the site," said Ingrid Jégousse, architect at Vurpas Architectes.
That meant finding acoustic solutions that could be installed between the beams discreetly, without frameworks or fixings that would visually compete with the original structure.

A different solution for each space
Installer STAM Acoustique worked with the architects to install acoustic tiles between the original beams without visible frameworks, keeping the industrial character intact.
In the lecture hall and multipurpose student hall, Rockfon Color-all tiles in Cork and Hemp were installed between the beams using double angles that hide the fixings entirely, creating a continuous coloured surface between each beam.
"The coloured tiles are held in place using double angles, which allows the framework to be hidden and gives this continuous coloured effect between the beams," said Jérôme Witz, Works Manager at STAM Acoustique.
In offices, laboratories and classrooms, Rockfon Ekla white acoustic tiles were installed using Chicago Metallic Infinity suspended grids. In one communal area, Ekla tiles form a floating island, suspended within the space.
"It's crucial to establish a calm environment for teachers, researchers and students to study under optimal conditions. Working closely with the acoustic design office, we set specific objectives, and today we're pleased to say we have successfully achieved them," said Florian Wieber of the Public Real Estate Heritage Department of Strasbourg.

Industrial heritage with academic function
The Manufacture des Tabacs shows that adaptive reuse of protected industrial buildings doesn't have to mean choosing between heritage and performance. With the right acoustic strategy and installation approach, both can coexist.
