In Blayney, New South Wales, CentrePoint Sport and Leisure Centre faced persistent noise from its busy swimming pool. Determined to improve visitor experience, Blayney Shire Council worked with the architecture firm Studio GA and Rockfon to install Humitec Baffles during a roof renovation. This solution reduced reverberation and maintained skylight diffusion, creating a quieter, more inviting environment for the community.
Moisture-resistant design quiets swimming spaces
Blayney Shire Council engaged Studio GA to design a roof renovation that included acoustic solutions suitable for an aquatic environment. After an analysis of acoustic challenges, Rockfon recommended Rockfon Humitec Baffles for their structural suitability, sound absorption, and resistance to moisture and corrosion, ensuring longevity in harsh pool conditions.
Before the renovation, the centre’s reverberation time was nearly 5.0 seconds, causing discomfort for swimmers and visitors. Through simulations, the Rockfon Humitec Baffles were shown to have reduced reverberation to under 2.0 seconds. This significant decrease created a calmer, more pleasant environment where pool users could enjoy their activities without intrusive echoes.
Built to withstand humid and corrosive Class D environments, Rockfon Humitec Baffles offer benefits beyond acoustics. With a stone wool core, they resist moisture and corrosion and do not support the growth of microorganisms, which is crucial for maintaining hygiene in swimming pool facilities.
By allowing soft, even illumination from the existing skylights at the centre, they reduce dependence on artificial lighting, supporting energy efficiency. The visual effect creates a welcoming atmosphere while ensuring the pool hall feels open and bright.
The installation of Rockfon Humitec Baffles at the CentrePoint Sport Centre was completed in 2021.
