A town hall ready for what comes next

Vejen Rådhus reopened in autumn 2019 after an extensive renovation, becoming a renewed civic landmark for the Danish town. The brief was clear: replace the dull, monotonous character common to public buildings with a modern, welcoming space that serves citizens and supports the daily work of its 184 municipal employees.

The new four-storey design organises public services and offices around an open central atrium, encouraging collaboration between departments and giving citizens a single, clear entrance to all city services. Wood and white materials run throughout, balancing classic and contemporary architecture inside and out.

But an open civic building with constant foot traffic and open office floors brings a real acoustic challenge alongside the aesthetic one.

Two groups, one space, two acoustic needs

A town hall has to work for two different groups at once. Citizens arriving to use city services generate constant movement, conversation and footfall throughout the day. Employees, often working in open office landscapes, need to concentrate and have clear conversations with the same citizens at their desks.

That dual function makes acoustic comfort essential. Especially with high foot traffic generating unwanted noise. A bad indoor environment, including uncontrolled sound, directly affects concentration, stress levels and overall efficiency for staff, and shapes how welcome citizens feel when they walk in.

Rockfon Blanka and Rockfon Mono Acoustic were installed across the town hall, each chosen for the specific role it plays.

Rockfon Blanka delivers Class A sound absorption throughout the office floors, canteen and meeting rooms, with a deep-matte white surface that maximises daylight reflection across the open spaces.

Rockfon Mono Acoustic was used where seamless, jointless surfaces were needed, including curved and feature areas around the central atrium. The continuous finish maintains the architectural coherence of the design while delivering the same Class A acoustic performance.

Both products share an anti-static surface that resists dirt and wear, an important detail for a building handling thousands of visitors each year. The high light reflection and diffusion across both surfaces draw natural light deeper into the building, reducing the need for artificial lighting and contributing to the overall indoor climate.
