Supporting flow, colour, and comfort in renovation

The renovation of the circular A325 landmark building in Arnhem aimed to improve internal flow and external presence. A transparent entrance façade and reconfigured spatial layout helped open the building up to its surroundings. A new park-like forecourt further connects the indoor and outdoor environments, encouraging a smoother transition between the shared spaces within.

Architect Anne de Bruijn of Fokkema & Partners described the new entrance as a key intervention to replace the original building’s closed appearance. “We envisioned a transparent façade, allowing for seamless integration with the environment”. The reimagined layout enhances daily use by creating more dynamic movement and a noticeably enriched visitor experience.

Inside, the design prioritised atmosphere. A central piazza-like zone with soft seating, greenery and an all-day bar replaced more conventional office features. Rockfon Color-all was selected to support this vision, offering acoustic performance in a range of nature-inspired colours. The ceilings contribute to a calm interior palette and help soften transitions between zones.

“The bar was a hidden gem in the original building that we decided to unveil”, said de Bruijn. Drawing people inward with subtle lighting and layered materials, the designers used Rockfon Color-all to help define spaces without closing them off. The ceiling system allowed visual consistency to be maintained while supporting a quiet, focused acoustic environment.

The building’s circular shape presented several challenges. “Tackling the round shape proved to be quite a feat”, said Thomas Jacobsen, manager at ACN Totale Afbouw. To match the architectural geometry, the team plotted the curves with a specialist firm. Bespoke shanks and panels were crafted on site and integrated with lighting and sprinklers for a clean, cohesive finish.

Sustainability was central to the renovation. ACN Totale Afbouw adapted the building’s existing installations to meet updated energy and acoustic standards. “We meticulously adapted the installations to meet current standards and preferences”, said Pieter Egelmeers of Van Aken. The result is a future-ready office that integrates modern amenities without compromising on acoustic quality.
