One ceiling range across 82,000m² of hospital

Scotland's largest NHS hospital needed the right ceiling for every space, from offices to operating theatres. One range covered it all.

Scotland's largest NHS hospital

Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert brought services from Falkirk and Stirling together into one £300 million building with 860 patient spaces. It's the largest NHS project in Scotland.

A hospital this size contains dozens of different spaces, each with its own demands, from quiet offices to sterile operating theatres to wet rooms. The ceiling had to suit all of them.

Every space, a different requirement

Hospital ceilings do more than one job. They control noise so patients can rest and staff can concentrate. They meet strict hygiene standards. And in some areas they have to resist moisture, corrosion or contamination.

The requirements shift from room to room. A waiting room and an intensive care ward are worlds apart in hygiene terms, and a shower room needs a different grid from a meeting room.

Covering all of that across 82,000m² could easily have meant a complicated specification.

One MediCare range, matched to each zone

Linear Projects installed 82,000m² of Rockfon MediCare ceilings, using the version of the range suited to each area.

Rockfon MediCare Standard was installed across roughly 60,000m² of general areas, wards, offices and meeting rooms, in 600x600mm and 1200x1200mm formats. Rockfon MediCare Plus was installed in the corridors and circulation zones, in a 2400x600mm plank format. In the en-suites, showers, wet areas and kitchens, Rockfon MediCare Standard was installed on an Enhanced Corrosion Resistant grid to withstand the moisture.

The Rockfon MediCare range is HTM 60 compliant across categories 2 to 6, which covers everything from low-risk offices to high-risk intensive care. Its stone wool core does not support the growth of micro-organisms, including MRSA, and its low particle emission meets ISO Class 5 clean room standards. Rockfon MediCare Standard can be cleaned by wiping or vacuuming. Rockfon MediCare Plus can be steam disinfected.

Using a single range across the whole hospital allowed Rockfon to simplify the specification without compromising on quality, value or service.
