Rockfon acoustic solutions contribute to patient comfort and privacy at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, supporting healing in a space designed for cutting-edge cancer care.
Spaces designed for healing and acoustic comfort
The hospital incorporates 110 single en-suite bedrooms and delivers pioneering cancer care including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, gene therapy, and radiotherapy. The open-plan chemotherapy department offers views across the city, giving each patient a dedicated bay with privacy screens, sockets, and Wi-Fi, allowing them to choose solitude or connection with others.
Liverpool’s maritime heritage and the hospital’s swooping curves have earned CCC-L the nickname “The Liner.” BDP Architect Principal Ged Couser commented, “Its modern sophisticated external skin is a clear expression of the cutting-edge research and care taking place within. Even in its tight urban context the internal spaces will have access to high quality external landscape, recognising the therapeutic value this brings.”
Linear Projects’ Nick Smith reflects, “Around 20 000 square metres of tile, grid, and accessories were supplied on time to what was a tight, urban site, by SIG. The installation went very smoothly, with the Rockfon team on hand to offer advice or technical support if needed.” His prior work with Rockfon at the TECA events complex in Aberdeen provided helpful experience.
Rockfon white acoustic ceiling tiles improve comfort through excellent acoustic absorption and light reflection. “Rockfon MediCare Plus was used throughout the building, with Rockfon Blanka dB being used to areas where the walls did not extend to the soffit and therefore, where higher acoustic insulation was required. We were very happy with the final outcome", explains May Ling Nuttman of Architects BDP.
HTM 60 compliant Rockfon MediCare Plus and Rockfon Blanka dB are perfect for demanding healthcare settings, offering Class A sound absorption, non-combustibility, and resistance to microorganisms. Both contribute to creating controlled, safe, and comfortable healthcare environments.

Design and innovation supporting cancer treatment
“The centre is the culmination of an eight-year vision that will bring state-of-the-art facilities and pioneering treatments to a region with one of the highest rates of cancer in the country. BDP’s truly stunning design for the new hospital rightly reflects the significance of this flagship development", concludes Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust Chief Executive Dr Liz Bishop.
