Our EPDs
Our product-specific, third-party verified Environmental Product Declarations are developed to the most rigorous standards.
What is an EPD?
An EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) is a standardized, transparent, and third-party verified document showing the environmental impacts associated with the life cycle of a product, from raw material extraction to end of life disposal. These impacts are grouped in 19 categories and include the Global Warming Potential (GWP). An EPD is the result of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).
How are EPDs used?
EPDs are primarily used with Building Life Cycle Assessments, which calculate the projected impact of a building before construction begins. In this way, investors, building owners and contractors can use environmental impact criteria to inform the choice of building materials. Building LCAs are highly valued by certification schemes like BREEAM and DGNB.
What makes a good EPD?
A good EPD is aligned with the most recent European standard for EPDs (EN15804+A2) and with ISO 14025. As such, the EPD should cover all life cycle stages (A1 to C4). The EPD should also be specific to the product in question. All Rockfon EPDs are developed according to EN15804+A2, include all life cycle modules, and give results for the different thicknesses and edge variants.
Can EPDs be compared?
According to the EN 15804 standard for EPDs, EPD comparisons should ideally be done as part of a building LCA. If product EPDs are to be directly compared, the EPDs should at a minimum have been developed to the same standard, use the same declared unit, relate to the same functional performance (e.g., Class A sound absorption), and include the same life cycle modules.
