The terminal’s wood and glass façade evokes Masurian nature, welcoming travellers with regional warmth and award-winning architecture.
Designing with nature as inspiration
Olsztyn-Mazury Airport in Poland brings nature and calm into its terminal design, blending wood, glass, and matte grey Rockfon Color-all ceilings. Inspired by the nearby Masurian lakes and forest homes, architect Tomasz Lella aimed to create a space that stood apart from standard airport design. The ceiling’s soft tone and acoustic performance provide comfort for travellers while complementing the natural palette of the interior.
Acoustic ceiling that supports the architectural vision
Architect Tomasz Lella drew from the Masurian landscape to shape the terminal’s identity. The 6800 square-metre interior references wooden houses, lake motifs and the region’s peaceful ambience. Every material and colour was selected to reflect this atmosphere and create a unique airport experience rooted in its location.
To achieve the wave-like ceiling design, Rockfon Color-all® in Stone was chosen. The grey tone echoes natural surroundings and offers a calm, matte finish that reduces glare. “Thanks to the appropriate size of the panels and the chosen light grey Stone colour, we obtained a homogeneous, matte surface with the exposed construction of the roof”, explains architect Tomasz Lella.
With large glazed surfaces and high foot traffic, the terminal needed strong acoustic control. Rockfon’s acoustic ceiling solution reduces reverberation, helping to create a quieter, more comfortable travel experience. Passengers benefit from clear communication and a calmer environment at every stage of their journey.
The airport terminal was selected as the winner of Poland’s national competition for passenger terminal development, standing out among 65 submissions. It was praised for its integration of local landscape and cultural references, as well as its well-balanced, scale-appropriate spatial design.
